At Crux Sancta, we celebrate marriage as a sacred, lifelong covenant—a divine union rooted in love, grace, and mutual devotion.
Marriage is more than a legal contract; it is a spiritual journey. In the eyes of the Church, holy matrimony is a permanent commitment that creates a sanctuary of faith, companionship, and shared life. It is a holy bond intended to support both partners through every season of life, enduring until death do us part.
What Is Required to Be Married?
To ensure your wedding day is meaningful, spiritually sound, and legally recognized, a few essential preparations are needed from both the Church and the Province of Ontario.
Requirements of the Church
- Faith & Intention: A mutual desire to enter into a sacred, lifelong covenant built on Christian love and faithfulness.
- Pastoral Consultation: A preparation meeting or conversation with our officiant to discuss the spiritual significance of the vows, spiritual guidance, and the details of your ceremony.
- Freedom to Marry: Confirmation that both individuals are free to enter into marriage according to church guidelines.
- Baptized or Willing to Be Baptized: A marriage can only be witnessed through the grace of baptism; meaning you are not just a creation of God, but one of his children.
Requirements of the Province of Ontario
- Marriage Licence: You must obtain a valid Ontario Marriage Licence from a municipal city hall or local municipal office within Ontario. The licence is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued.
- Identification: Both partners must provide official government-issued ID (such as a passport or birth certificate) when applying for the licence.
- Witnesses: On the day of your ceremony, two adult witnesses (aged 18 or older) must be present to sign the official Marriage Register and Licence.
- Age Requirements: Both parties must be at least 18 years of age (or 16–17 years old with written parental consent).
